10/23/08 - BJJ - Warriors Edge

Last night was the gi class. We worked on an arm drag from butterfly guard/combat base. From the arm drag you take their back, let them roll, and either do an arm bar or a choke.

Sitting into combat base from knees

  • From knees, step your right foot in between their legs
  • Let your left leg follow and sit down
  • With your left hand, control their sleeve/wrist
  • With your right hand grab their lapel or their head
Arm Drag from combat base to taking the back
  • Take your right hand and grab behind their tricep
  • Hug their arm with your body
  • Lay back as you pull their arm across your body to the right
  • Grab their belt and start working your way up their back, getting your hooks in
  • Grab their lapel with your left hand, break them down or roll with them
Arm bar from back
  • Your left hand has their collar so let them think your going to choke them
  • With your right hand, start to isolate their right arm
  • Your right leg goes across their stomach
  • Push their head down with your left hand and swing your left leg over top
  • Finish arm bar
Choke from back
  • Your left hand already has their lapel
  • Swing your hips to the left as your right leg goes over their stomach just like the set up for an arm bar
  • Your right hand grabs their right leg
  • Arch back as you pull their leg toward you and stretch your right leg out for the choke
After class I got to roll with the other instructor (I forget his name) but he was a purple belt as well. He was the one who actually did most of the teaching.
I tried a few of the moves we learned in class and after a few minutes of him dominating me, he stopped and asked if there was anything I wanted to work on. I said I always get stuck under side control. So he put me in side control to see what I do. After that he critiqued it and gave me some pointers.

  1. Post my right arm on the hip. Its used for stopping them not pushing them
  2. Keep my left hand by my neck to protect both my neck and my arm
  3. Really try to get that knee in between us.
  4. Once the knee is there I don't have to keep pulling it in to replace guard. Use it to push him away more. Guard will eventually get replaced.
Then I rolled with other instructor Ted. He dominated me again but also gave me some pointers.
  1. The arm drag only works if the opponent isnt in guard. (ie - if they are passing, or trying to stand)
  2. When someone is trying to pass my guard I need to make sure my head is lower than theirs. If my shoulders are square and my back erect then they can just shove their shoulder into mine to force me onto my back as they pass.
Awesome class!

10/21/08 - BJJ - Warriors Edge

Well it's been 8 months since I've trained. Due to moving, finding a new school, money and time its been a little hard to get back to it. But it is long over due!

I found 2 schools that seemed good but were either a little to expensive or just a tad to far away. They were the Relson Gracie Academy and Infinite Jiu Jitsu. Infinite was really as far as I wanted to travel but they were a little expensive. Relson was a good price but a little to far away. Plus they have 3 hour classes!

Finally I found Warriors Edge in Buda. Only 15 min away and a good price.

I showed up 15 min late for the no-gi class because I couldnt find the place. When I got there there were 2 students and the instructor (Ted, a purple belt under Vandry). We worked on the arm bar from guard and transition to triangle. After that we rolled 8 min matches.

I rolled 3 matches and feel I did pretty good being that I havent rolled in 8 months! I was surprised that I didnt gas out as much as I thought I would.

One of those matches was rolling with the instructor. I forgot what it was like to roll with a purple! He had a tight game!

I need to work on my side control escape, knee on belly escape, and grips.

2/20/08 - BJJ - Mr. Gilmore

We warmed up by rolling around for a bit. I rolled with Sam for position. I did pretty good but he does have a good 50+ lbs or more on me.

We then went into an RNC set up from that back.

  • You start to sink in the RNC
  • They defend with both hands by pulling your arm down
  • As they are pulling down you push their hands down which allows you easy access to slip in your other arm for the RNC
  • At any time as you push their hands down you can trap their arm with your leg
  • Now they only have 1 arm free
From there you can also throw an arm bar from the back as well

Then I rolled with Ian for about 20 min. We were pretty evenly matched but he did pull off two good submissions that I didnt even see coming. One was some sort of neck crank and the other I should have seen coming but didn't. The armless triangle.

2/15/08 - BJJ - Open Mat

I started off rolling with JD. Took his back quite a few times but could never get the RNC in tight. I ended up going two rounds with him and submitted him with an arm bar and reverse armbar.

After that I went over some takedowns with Sam and we rolled one round. He tapped me. With a kimura I think.

2/6/08 - BJJ - Sa Bom Nim

Last night was the first no gi class and open mat I ever did. We started up with the usual lap running for a warm up. We then went to the wall. Shrimped back twice and then did a backwards roll, stood up in base, and did a break fall backwards. Wash rinse repeat.

We then went into hip throw when your partner throws a right hook.

  • They throw the right hook
  • You block (elbow up to your ear) and grab under their arm and put your back into them
  • Lean forward for the throw
  • From there we went into an arm bar once they were on the ground
Then we went into other skills from the guard:

Arm triangle choke/neck crank (NG)

  • They are in your guard
  • Bump them forward as you pull their right arm across their body (grab them with your left hand at their elbow and your right hand at their wrist)
  • Shoot your right arm straight up and over their head/neck
  • Grab your left bicep and put your left arm on their forehead
  • Squeeze and push their head back. If you can grapevine their legs even better.
Guillotine (NG)

Guillotine to one arm under shoulder lock (shoulder tear) (NG)
  • As your going for the guillotine they tuck their head so get your underhook instead (your right arm)
  • With your left forearm and elbow keep pressure on their shoulder and clasp your hands together
  • Keep the pressure with your left as you crank with your right
Guillotine to one arm under shoulder lock to sweep and arm bar (NG)
  • If you can't get the submission go for the sweep by twisting to your left
  • They are now on their back with their arm above their head
  • Keep pressure with your head on their arm so it doesnt go anywhere and until you can grab it with your left hand
  • Slip your right hand under their elbow and grab your bicep for the arm bar

1/30/08 - BJJ - Mr. Stuart

Last night was crazy! We warmed up with 5 laps and then Mr. Stuart surprised us with part of the Army physical fitness test. I did:

  • 71 pushups in 2 min
  • 67 sit ups in 2 min
  • 170 something jumping jacks in 2 min
  • And then a shuttle run 21 times in 2 min
Then we had about a 1 min break and started rolling! I was partnered with Matt. I had to break his guard within a min. I did. Then I had to get out of his side control and mount in 1 min. I couldn't. After that we rolled for 3 min matches. My first match was against a smaller teenager kid. I was beat so I basically took mount and stayed there for 3 min more or less. Next I went against JD. He crazy. He started throwing elbows to my head and legs and was trying some crazy moves that I think he just made up. I knew I wasnt in danger so I just let him waste his energy. Then I went against Dereck. He's a beast. He tapped me with an Americana from 1/2 guard. I should have never let him get there but I was to tired to even fight back. Next round I took his back and kept it for most of the time. He was really tight though so I didnt really get much other than his back.

After class I took a 2 min break and then rolled with JD again. He was trying some of his crazy stuff again. I almost got him in a triangle. I wish my legs werent so short! But then tapped him with an arm bar.

After that I thought there was open mat but appearently there wasnt because everyone left. So I joined the cardio class.

BJJ - 1/24/08 - Mr Stuart

Warmup - Ran 10 laps then piggy back rides, wheelbarrows, and firemans carries

We then went into some moves from guard. My partner was Shawn.

Sit-up Kimura From Guard (NG)
Sit-up Kimura From Guard to Guillotien (NG)
Sit-up Kimura From Guard to Guillotien to Should Tear (NG)

  • They ducked their head so you cant get the guillotien
  • Underhook their arm at their bicep
  • Close your guard again and lay back down
  • Crank their arm so their shoulders touch

Sit-up Kimura From Guard to Guillotien to Crucafix (NG)

  • Like the shoulder tear but you have both underhooks instead of just one
  • Lay back and roll to one side
  • Place palms on floor
  • Switch your hips and sit up

Arm-less triangle (NG)

  • They pull both arms out of triangle
  • Same leg that is across their back, shoot that arm up to grab your ankle
  • That arm replace their arm
  • Finish Triangle

Then I rolled with Shawn. I didnt do horrible but I didnt really do good either. He tapped me out in the first match. Cant remember how. In the second match I controlled but didnt get a tap. Then we ran out fo time because class went 15 min late anyways.

BJJ - 01/16/08 - Sa Bom Nim

So I haven't blogged in just about 2 months. Thats because I unfortunately have not worked out for that long. Iv'e just about gained all my pre-tourney weight back as well. It started around Thanksgiving. Then it was the boys birthdays. Then Christmas, New Years, and two weeks in Texas. But tonight was my first night back and I loved it.

Warm up - Jog 10 laps, stretching

Warmup Drills - Arm bar from mount, roll backwards then the other person takes mount and start over

Drills -

  • Sitting arm bar -
    • If they cross grab your lapel (with right hand) kick your right leg into their armpit.
    • Likewise, in a street fight, if you are kicking them and they grab your leg....
    • Sit down and spin to your right as you throw your left leg over their head for the arm bar
  • Arm Bar from Mount (NG)
  • Arm bar from X choke, mount
    • They go to defend by pulling your arm away
    • You push their arm to your left and across their body
    • Slide your left knee under their head and your right knee goes to its foot
    • Cross face them as you then throw your left leg over their head
    • Finish arm bar
  • Arm bar from guard (NG)
  • Counter to arm bar (NG)
    • Grab your lapel with the arm being arm barred
    • With your other hand grab their pant leg and get their leg off of your head
    • Lay on their leg like a pillow
    • Drive your body backwards, this will roll them enough to get you lose
    • Turn and you will be back into their guard.
Sparring 7 min with new kid
