08/29/07 - BJJ - Matt (Blue Belt)

Matt taught tonight which was a nice change. He's a blue belt but is very helpful when rolling with. He'll stop and tech you in the middle of rolling.

We started out class by running laps (regular, side shuffle, backwards, and with a forward roll). We then went into pushups. From the normal pushup position place one arm slightly forward and the other slightly back. We did 10 reps like this and then switched arm positions and did 10 more reps. We then went into a partner drill. The drill was:

  • Jab, cross, bob & weave, cross
  • Your partner then fell to the ground and you got into knee on belly position and ripped out 10 more cross punches to the targets.
After that we worked on the same arm control Matt showed me last time

Sweep from guard
  • Pull opponents right arm across your body like you would for a triangle
  • Immediately use your left arm to grab their neck to keep them down and "hug" them as close as you can. This will close the distance so it makes it harder for them to pull their arm out.
  • With your left hand over their neck, grab their right wrist. This is the wrist you pulled across their body.
  • Rotate your body to your right while you under hook their left leg with your right arm.
  • As you do this, use your right leg over their shoulder to help keep them down.
  • From there you can start the sweep by raising your left leg for momentum.
  • Kick your leg down towards your butt and make sure you tuck it in at the end or else it will get stuck under your opponent.
  • As you kick your leg (similar to a pendulum sweep) it should give you momentum to roll them over and take mount while still having their arm wrapped around their neck.
Ezekiel type choke from this position
  • You are in mount position with your left arm under their head holding their right wrist
  • Take your right hand and slip it in the opening that their right elbow creates
  • Grab your left tricep/sleeve
  • Pull up with your left arm and down with your right
  • This scissor motion will finish the choke.
  • Also, make sure your chest and body weight is helping you push your right elbow to the ground
Double Armbar from this position
  • You are in mount position with your left arm under their head holding their right wrist
  • Cup your right hand under their left tricep (their free arm)
  • Pull it to your ear and cup it with your ear and shoulder
  • Scoot your left knee to their head and plant your right foot (combat base)
  • Using your left arm you have an armbar from there
  • If you don't like that armbar, you also have the option to step over and armbar their left arm by sitting down in the "traditional" armbar
At the end of class we rolled a little and I also learned another move

Scissor sweep from knees - As the opponent pushed up and into you sit your butt down and scoot your legs into scissor sweep position and sweep.
