9/27/07 - SBD - Evaluation

Last night I went to the white, yellow, and orange belt evaluation because I missed my Dan evaluation on Monday due to Gabe being sick. I was the only Dan testing.

We started off with basics and they only asked me to demonstrate up to orange belt level basics. I guess they already know before the test how good you are. And besides, if I'm doing orange belt level basics I better be doing them with perfect technique. So they can grade on that as well.

We then went onto self defense. I did my sleeve grabs and really messed them up. I did them correctly but his hand was so sweaty it was hard to get a good grip on it. Something I need to be prepared for but it just made it a lot harder.

We then did kicks, again only to orange belt level.

And ended with form #1 by Sa Bom Nim's count.

Other than my self defense everything went pretty well. And Erin even made 7th gup (orange belt, blue stripe)

9/25/07 - Workout at Parents and a random BJJ though

Last night we picked up my mom from the airport and went over their house afterwards. I took advantage of my mom watching the kids and hopped on the elliptical machine for 45min.

I have also been thinking about my first match in the BJJ tournament. I really need to attack (from guard)! If I am attempting a sweep, choke, or armbar that will put then on the defensive and start to frustrate them. Either way they will either be busy defending and therefor open something up, or they will get frustrated and start getting sloppy, thus opening something up.

I also talked to my dad about the sit out when someone sprawls on you (in reguards to my 2nd match). I sat out and just kept spinning around. My partner kept spinning around with me and almost got my back. What I needed to do was to control his arm. And even if I didnt control the arm, after sitting out, I needed to switch my hips and turn to my knees.

9/22/07 - BJJ Tournament at Hassets

Yesterday was my first Brazilian Jiu Jitsu Tournament!! I had a great time! and yes, I was able to make my weight class! I have been trying for two weeks to get down below 170 (from at least 176) and I ended up weighing in at 168.4lbs!

In terms of learning things, my first match went well! Even though I lost. My game plan was to go out there and go for the take down. Even if I didn't get it, at least he wouldn't have gotten it. Well it turns out that I went into the match and completely went against my plan. I just stood there playing with him. In my mind I was trying to feel him out...see if I should shoot in for a single/double or clinch up and work from there. He ended up going for the takedown. I don't know if he was awarded any points for it (other than an advantage)) because I defended it pretty well and after some rolling around he ended up in my guard.

I didn't have anyone there coaching me, so that made it a little hard as well but I did hear his coach telling him what to do so I played off of that. They wanted him to posture up and get his hands on my belt. So I kept him close with his hands above my belt. I tried for a scissor sweep and a sit up sweep (and almost got them) but he defended pretty well. He eventually passed my guard (after keeping him in there and putting him back in there a few times). From side control he finally got me in an americana. I straightened my arm once but he manhandled me and got it back. This time I tried to roll out of it but I guess he had his weight distributed well enough. All of a sudden I felt the ref stop us so I figured time ran out or we had moved to far to the side. It turns out the ref stopped the fight early because "it was in tight". I know he wanted to play it safe but to tell you the truth the kid didn't have it in very well.

Take aways from the match:

  • Impose my game on him - get out there and shoot for the takedown.
  • Attack! - I tried the X choke on him but I didn't have it in good so I gave it up. Even if I didn't have it in good I should have still continued with it because it would have put him on the D instead of a position to pass my guard.
  • When going for the sweep just do it! I was scared of him passing my guard if I went for the sweep. I know at least once I didn't try my hardest for the sweep because of this fear.
Match 2 went a lot better - even though I still lost :)

My second match was absolute division. And to my disadvantage I ended up with one of the heavy weights. Go figure. And on top of it, he was a blue belt that looked like he had been for quite some time.

By this time I had already learned from my mistakes. I went it there and went for his lapel (to see if I could pull it out a little). It seemed in there pretty good and I didn't want to waste any time because it looked like he wanted to clinch me right there. Remembering that Sa Bom Nim had said bigger guys like to clinch rather than shoot in, I decided to shoot in for the single. He sprawled so I tried to duck under and pop out the left side (my left). I gout out but not fully around to his back. He almost got my back but I got out of it and he somehow got mount. I was smothered under there! I got out of mount and put him into 1/2 guard. By the time I could even react he hand my arm straightened and was ready to arm lock it. I tried to get out of it by grabbing something (a lapel, his arm, anything!) and turning but he ended up with my arm straight on the ground. I tried ti bend it back to my body but it was to late.

Take aways from this match:
  • I imposed my game on him (at least with the takedown). I went for it and when it didn't work I tried my backup plan of escape.
  • Pay more attention to my arm placement and what he is doing with them. Don't worry about my surroundings (points, time, etc....in this case trying to breathe because he was smothering me.
So while I was there for about 5 hours or so and only got to roll twice, it was still an awesome learning experience and I had a great time! Thanks Mr. Hasset!

And I cant forget to mention, Matt came home with third in his division (he had to forfeit his last match because of a wedding) and Zack came home with first in his division! Way to go!

9/20/07 - BJJ - Sa Bom Nim

We started out stretching and then ran 5 laps around the floor. We then went into stand up take take downs.

Single leg

  • Shoot in and wrap both hands around one of their legs
  • Make sure your head is inside towards their belly or else you will get cross faced!!!
  • As you grab their leg put it in between your legs and clamp it with your knees.
  • Step your right foot over (if you attacked their right leg) and lift as you walk towards them.
Single leg trip - (after they sprawl)
  • Shoot in on their right for the single leg
  • Make sure your head is inside!
  • They sprawl so you wrap/hook your left leg around their right leg and drive forward
  • Control and clear their legs for side control
Standing to sitting takedown
  • Your tied up in a clinch
  • Step your right foot back to throw them off balance a little
  • Step your right foot in between their feet (not past their feet though)
  • Turn sideways to your left and sit backwards
  • Your right foot can hook their left leg as well
We then move on to the

Sitting arm bar
  • If they cross grab your lapel while you are standing grab that elbow. You will also want to control their other arm/elbow as well
  • Assuming they are using their right hand, put your right foot in their hip and sit down
  • Key point! - As you are sitting make sure you turn!
  • Swing your other leg around for the armbar
After that we rolled. I started off with JD and took him down with a single leg trip. He somehow got me in a reverse triangle but didn't know what to do. Whew! I finally found the foot I needed to attack and pulled it off. By that time he was gassed so he stopped.

I then moved onto Joe. I will probably say this every time I roll with him but man! He's a beast! He throws me around like a rag doll. Sa Bom Nim pointed out that as soon as someone is moving to side control I need to start scooting away. Don't wait till they get there.

I then rolled with Sa Bom Nim. Boy that sucked! I was to worried about impressing him that my game was real bad. Of course he was tight as a turtle so any attack I tried was defended before I could even pull it. This made me start to worry more, hence more mistakes. I did do good on one pat though. He tried to get me in a kimura from N/S but I defended by rolling, he tried again, I rolled, then he went for the armbar and I cleared his leg and tried to stack him. After we were done he said that it seemed like I was trying really hard and trying to muscle everything. Which was 1/2 true. So unless I kick butt at this tourney I dont think I will be getting my blue. Oh well. I guess I am just not ready for it. Only time will tell.

Oh and one other note....
After waking up this morning (9/21/07) I weighed myself and it looks like Im going to make weight. I was 167.5 and if our scale is 1 lb less than the Dr's then that puts me at 168.5 which is still making weight! Hopefully ill lose a little more today as well...which might be hard because I want to take it easy the day before the tourney.

9/20/07 - SBD - Gilmore Sa Bom

Last night we started by drilling our basics from white belt to dan. After that we did a kicking/ab drill.

There were 3 people in our group and we had 1 standing bag. We did 5 kicks each leg and then laid the standing bag down on its side. You would lay on top of the bag with your torso hanging off while one of your partners held your legs. We switched between 15 extended sit ups or 10 side (oblique) sit ups per side. The partner who was not holding or doing the sit ups did jumping jacks. We then switched and once all of us were done we picked the bag up and started on a different kick. After the kicks were done, the bag went back down and we did more sit ups. Wash, rinse, and repeat.

All of the kicks we did:

  • front
  • round
  • step behind side
  • inside outside
  • jumping front
  • jumping back
  • wheel
  • 360 back
There might have been one or 2 more kicks but that was pretty much it.

We ended the class with another ab exercise. We lined up (4 in our row) and grabbed a medicine ball. while the first person was doing the medicine ball the rest had to do some sort of ab exercise, their choice. The person with the medicine ball had to do sitting trunk twists. Lock your ankles, lean back, feet off the ground, rotate with ball. We had to do 15 reps. Once we were done, pass the ball to the next person in line and start doing your choice of ab exercises. We had to do 4 rounds of that.

9/19/07 - Home Workout

I took a 20 min walk at work with Alex.

Then last night was the 2 hour season finally for Last Comic Standing. Why did it have to be 2 hours?! Well I couldn't miss that. So I took advantage of commercial breaks.

I skipped rope for a total of about 800 rotations or so.
I did a few sets of burpees (15 reps/set)
I did the MMA drill where you take a kick shield on the floor and work from side control to knee on belly, 3 punches, mount, 3 elbows, knee on belly opposite side, 3 punches, side control. Wash rinse and repeat till you pass out.

I also realized that my Gi top weighs about 4.5 lbs! I really hope we dont have to weigh in with our Gi on. I'm going to email Mr Hassett again today to find out.

9/17/07 - Home Workout

Skipped rope and ran again tonight. For skipping rope I did 500 rotations in 6 min. As for running, I ran another 4 blocks. I jogged 2, ran 1, jogged the last (with a 30sec sprint in the middle of the last). After I got in the house I stretched and then ate. Spinach, grapes, and water.

9/15/07 - Cardio Class

Sa Bom Nim started class out with a tae bo sort of warm up.

We did a jumping jack, jab, jumping jack, jab...
Then jumping jack, hook

We then went on to Jab, cross, hook, uppercut, switch your feet, round kick to the beat

Then we partnered up. There were two stations per group. One station was bags, the other was some sort of exercise.

On the bag work side of things we did jabs, jab/cross, jab/cross/hook, jab/cross/hook/elbow.

At the exercise station we did push ups, medicine ball trunk twists, lunges, shuttle run, squat kicks, frog leaps, one leg jumps, more shuttle runs, shoulder presses, bicep curls, push up wheel, and maybe a few others I can't think of.

To end the class we did a sit up drill with a self defense application. Partner was in our open guard and we had to do 10 sit ups like we were going to preform the guillotine (sit up reach behind and over their head). We did 5 sets of 10 reps. Oh, and on the 9th and 10th rep we actually preformed the choke.

9/13/07 - Workout

Last night I put the boys to bed and did a little cardio.

Skipping rope - 500 rotations
Running - 4 Laps around the block (About 1.8 miles) - three times each lap I sprinted for 20 sec then jogged for 10 sec. The last lap I just jogged.

9/12/07 - BJJ - Matt

Most everyone is going to the tournament so we worked a little on takedowns.

If they grab your lapel:

  • Grab their sleeve above and below their wrist
  • Squat down and as you stand back up, push their wrist/arm down
  • Pull them towards your right hip
  • Put your shoulder into their back/shoulder and drive them forward
  • As they push back up, put your left leg behind them and change directions
  • As they come up you follow them and sit down to your side
  • End in side control or mount
We also worked on the basic hip throw.

We then worked on the Ezekiel type choke and double arm bar from mount.

We tried to roll a lot but it didn't seem like long. That could be because I started rolling with a 14 year old kid who I was obviously taller than and out weighed. This was nice though because I actually got to work on my submissions a lot more this way.

I then rolled with Joe. He's a beast! I did real well though. I need to learn a sweep from 1/2 guard and practice it.

I then rolled with Matt. He reminded me to pull on their head to annoy and wear them out. I really need to remember this. It cal also be done from knee on the belly.

I really just need to roll as much as I can.

Last night was aslo the first night I got to roll in my new Gi. I loved it! It fits so nicely. I thought the seam down the back would be annoying but I didn't even notice it. I dont know if it made me sweat more or if it was just less absorbent. I didn't get to try the pants yet because they need to be hemmed and possibly taken in.

9/12/07 - SBD - Sa Bom Nim

Yesterday I took off of work to get a few things done. One of them was being able to go to a Dan class.

Our warm up was focused on using Il Soo Sik in a practical self defense sort of way. Sa Bom nim seemed focused on the fact that even though we might be very technical and be able to pass our test we might not know things in a way that we can use them in a self defense situation.

Junior started by punching to the face. We could use the first two moves of either Il Soo Sik 1 or 2 and would then "rotate" around our partner as if we were getting out of the way. We did that up and down the mat room.

We then had the junior start by throwing a low front kick to test the water. As they did that we would back up and then immediately jump in with a flying punch (superman punch). We found that if you could even just catch the foot a little while you were backing up it threw your partner off balance and gave you that extra second to get in there for the punch.

We then went into knife self defense #3 (slash). A few things to keep in mind

  • Chop/hit their wrist as you bring it down and towards them
  • Break the wrist as your looking at them BEFORE you step completely through. Then step, disarm, and kick.
We also practiced bursting (hitting and blocking at the same time) and throwing in knees.

We then went into forms (Jung Jul, Jin Do, Nai Han Ji E Dan)

Points Sa Bom Nim made:
Jung Jol
  • Use our hip more
  • Small hop on 2nd to last move. Not so much of a hop as it is a shifting your weight to your left as you step your foot that way actually.
Jin Do
  • On Jump front kick, keep your hands on your chest
  • Use our hip
  • The Hu Gul Ha Dan Mahk Kee towards the begining (before the push) is actually Sang Soo (two hand) low block.
Nai Han Ji E Dan
  • Very low and heavy
  • On the "hook punch" towards the end...as you are stepping...that move is actually trapping someones leg
  • Use your hips
  • On the 3rd move of the form (the slapping motion) your tip of your fingers on your open hand should be at your wrist not next to the fist

9/10/07 - Workout at Home

Last night we didn't get to go to my parents because Diane went into labor and my mom had to pack and get airline tickets. So we ended up getting cell phones instead :)

Once I put the kids down I did a little work out at home.

  • Jumping Jacks x 50 reps
  • Skipping Rope x ~300 rotations
  • Running - 3 laps around the block (about 1.3 miles)
    • 1st lap - jogged 10 seconds, ran 20 secs. did that 3 times and jogged the rest of the lap
    • 2nd lap - same as first but only 2 times
    • 3rd lap - same as previous but only 1 time

9/8/07 - Cardio Circuit training - Mr Stuart/Sa Bom Nim

Today I went to Cardio class because we are leaving at 12:30 to go to Kenny's B-Day so I could not make it to SBD.

We started out with a Tae Bo sort of warm up for about 5-10 min I would guess.

We then had 24 stations and did 2 rounds. The first round was 1 min each station and the second round was 20 seconds each station.

If I can remember all the stations it would be amazing. Lets see:

  1. sit ups
  2. standing bag (hands only)
  3. shuttle run
  4. jump rope
  5. standing bag (hands only)
  6. lats
  7. mountain climbers
  8. standing bag (hands only)
  9. tricep dips
  10. squat kicks
  11. standing bag (hands only)
  12. lunges
  13. push ups
  14. standing bag (hands only)
  15. cross/jab
  16. medicine ball twists
  17. standing bag (hands only)
  18. bicep curls
  19. MMA workout
  20. standing bag (hands only)
  21. side jump
  22. push up wheel
  23. standing bag (hands only)
  24. one leg lifts
Thats 8 rounds on the punching bag per lap! The second lap we did kicking only on the punching bag.

We then went to a partner drill. They would throw hooks. You would block the first and second ones, bob the 3rd & fourth ones, then your partner would try to tackle you while you sprawled on top of them. We did that until we were told to switch. We then did the same thing again but this time when you sprawled you would spin to their back and then back to the front (a complete 360).

To finish, we did a good stretch. Sheryl gave me advice while stretching for a sitting split stretch. Keep your back straight and try to touch your belly button to the floor. I was originally, bending my back to get my head to the floor.

9/6/07 - Workout at Dad's

Last night I started with 50 jumping jacks and then ran on the elliptical machine for 45 min. At about every 5 min I would try to sprint for 1 min straight. After that I skipped rope for 100 rotations. After that I stretched my legs a little and went to the speed bag. Since I didn't really want to work on weight training to much so I thought that would be a good option. Cardio and arm speed strength at the same time. I even worked on throwing elbows at it. 1,2,elbow. To end it I stretched my legs again really well and called it a night.

Cutting Weight

I decided yesterday afternoon (after 4 slices of pizza at work) that I might try cutting weight for the BJJ tournament in two weeks. Since weigh in is only2 hours before the tournament dehydration isn't going to work very well for me.

Right now I have 2 scales. My electronic scale at home weighed me in at 175lbs this morning. My parents doctor style scale weighed me in at about 180 lbs last night. Which one is right? Im not sure. Ill have to keep an eye on my weight using both scales I guess. The two weight classes I could be in are middleweight(150-169.9) and cruiserweight(170-189.9). If I only need to loose 5 lbs then I know I should be able to do that in 2 weeks. If I have to loose 10 lbs...I don't know. I would hate to lose 9 lbs and end up at the bottom of the cruiserweight devision.

My plan to lose weight is as follows:

  • Cut back (out) on dry carbs as much as possible. This is kind of hard sometimes because most snacks that I can eat at work are packed with them. I am going to have to start cooking my own veggies to take to work. I don't want to put any extra pressure on Erin with cooking. So cook my own veggies and buy some fruit. If I am out to eat I will start eating w/o the bun and ask for extra veggies.
  • No more dessert/junk food till after the tourney. My downfall is sweets. I will cut these out completely since its two weeks away.
  • No Soda or high sugar drinks. I'm pretty good with this one already since I rarely drink anything other than water. But I will make sure I don't fall into the trap at any parties.
  • Drink plenty of H20
  • Cardio, cardio, cardio! Use my parents elliptical machine as much as possible. Try to go on a walk at work every day. Go to SBD and BJJ. Any other work out at home is cardio related. Skip rope.
  • Ease up on weight lifting. If I do any weight lifting do a lot of reps with lighter weights.
  • Natural cleansers? Maybe my dad going on this organic health kick is a good thing. Im going to call him today and talk to him about colon cleansing and what not. I just want to get that done this week though so I'm not crapping my pants during the tournament.
  • Eat plenty of fiber. Along the lines of pooping my pants...fiber helps with weight loss.
  • Take my vitamins
  • Get as much sleep as I can. With two kids that is hard sometimes. I need to see my wife and Ive got websites to do on the side. I'm not talking about getting 10 hrs of sleep or anything but just make sure im not up late watching TV while Erin is asleep on the couch.
Thats about all I can think about since I cant sweat it out the day before. And like I said before...I need to keep an eye on my weight loss and make sure I'm on track with it. If I'm going to lose weight I want to make sure I lose it all.

9/5/2007 - SBD - Losasso Sa Bom

We started out with normal stretching and then moved into kicking techniques (Jok Gi). I need work on my spinning long jump hook kick. Especially with my left leg.

We then moved onto self defense. Mr. Willis and I started with cross grips but Losasso Sa Bom asked us to teach the white, orange, and green belts the non-standard self defense. That included, bear hug arms over and under, headlock, lapel grab far and lapel grab close. We didnt know the close lapel grab so I need to figure that one out. We were about to go over bump and roll from mount but ran out of time.

I also noticed that when I train I use the word "basically" a lot.
You basically move your hip like this....
Once you take them down you finish with a punch basically...
and so on. I need to work on that.

We then closed class....basically.

9/5/07 - BJJ - Sa Bom Nim

Tonight we started with Mr. Stuart by running laps like usual and then did some punch/kick/breakfall drills on the poles. Sa Bom Nim then took over the class and we went over some chokes.

Chokes from Guard

New Choke from guard
  • They are trying to double underhook to pass your guard
  • You scoot back (like a crab walk) and get into butterfly guard as they try to stack you
  • Grab their lapel, opposite lapel with opposite arm (like you are saluting the flag in SBD)
  • Your other hand goes over they head and grabs you bicep
  • As you sit up turn towards your hand thats over their head and squeeze
Baseball Choke from side control
  • In side control (on their right side for this example), take your left hand under their head and grab their lapel. Palm up, thumb in.
  • Jump to knee on belly and get your right hand in palm up. Your hands should now look like you were holding a baseball bat.
  • Make sure your arm/elbow is not on their chest but over their neck.
  • As you jump back to side control slide your right knee over their arm to prevent them from turning into you.
  • Keep rotating into North South position as you bring your right elbow to your left elbow to finish the choke.
Baseball choke with gi
  • Same as above but pull their skirt on their left site under their shoulder and grab that with your left hand instead of their lapel.
  • Variation 2: If they are defending with their left hand by their neck, use their lapel to tie up that hand. Pass the lapel over top of their wrist and under their head, then re-grab.
After our techniques we rolled. I started out with Garret. It was a good few rolls. I then moved onto Rob and finally Matt. I tried pulling the scissor sweep from knees but he was prepared since he was the one who taught it to me. I then tried the choke from sprawl (as mentioned above) but he was able to base out so I couldn't roll him. It was a good roll none the less.

Also worth mentioning, Hasset's school is having a tournament on Sept 22nd. Its open to all white and blue belt adults that are Balance affiliates. The cost is only $25.

And lastly, I visited Balance Studios today. I was surprised. They were a nice school but were basically a hole in the wall. I assumed they would be bigger since Phil and Rick are big names in Philly. They said they are getting more and more walk ins since Phil and Rick were featured in tapout and the MMA magazines. But once again, a very nice school. The class was mostly blue and purple belts with only one white belt that I saw. And a black belt teaching. Hopefully I will be able to get in there and train every once in a while.
