We ended with 25 Squat jumping jacks

08/29/07 - BJJ - Matt (Blue Belt)

Matt taught tonight which was a nice change. He's a blue belt but is very helpful when rolling with. He'll stop and tech you in the middle of rolling.

We started out class by running laps (regular, side shuffle, backwards, and with a forward roll). We then went into pushups. From the normal pushup position place one arm slightly forward and the other slightly back. We did 10 reps like this and then switched arm positions and did 10 more reps. We then went into a partner drill. The drill was:

  • Jab, cross, bob & weave, cross
  • Your partner then fell to the ground and you got into knee on belly position and ripped out 10 more cross punches to the targets.
After that we worked on the same arm control Matt showed me last time

Sweep from guard
  • Pull opponents right arm across your body like you would for a triangle
  • Immediately use your left arm to grab their neck to keep them down and "hug" them as close as you can. This will close the distance so it makes it harder for them to pull their arm out.
  • With your left hand over their neck, grab their right wrist. This is the wrist you pulled across their body.
  • Rotate your body to your right while you under hook their left leg with your right arm.
  • As you do this, use your right leg over their shoulder to help keep them down.
  • From there you can start the sweep by raising your left leg for momentum.
  • Kick your leg down towards your butt and make sure you tuck it in at the end or else it will get stuck under your opponent.
  • As you kick your leg (similar to a pendulum sweep) it should give you momentum to roll them over and take mount while still having their arm wrapped around their neck.
Ezekiel type choke from this position
  • You are in mount position with your left arm under their head holding their right wrist
  • Take your right hand and slip it in the opening that their right elbow creates
  • Grab your left tricep/sleeve
  • Pull up with your left arm and down with your right
  • This scissor motion will finish the choke.
  • Also, make sure your chest and body weight is helping you push your right elbow to the ground
Double Armbar from this position
  • You are in mount position with your left arm under their head holding their right wrist
  • Cup your right hand under their left tricep (their free arm)
  • Pull it to your ear and cup it with your ear and shoulder
  • Scoot your left knee to their head and plant your right foot (combat base)
  • Using your left arm you have an armbar from there
  • If you don't like that armbar, you also have the option to step over and armbar their left arm by sitting down in the "traditional" armbar
At the end of class we rolled a little and I also learned another move

Scissor sweep from knees - As the opponent pushed up and into you sit your butt down and scoot your legs into scissor sweep position and sweep.

  • Rotate your body
  • Your left arm pushes their face away
  • Your left leg swings over to complete the arm bar

  • knife hand w/ side of your hand

8/27/07 - Workout at Dad's

Last night at my parent's place we worked out in the basement for about 30-45 min. My dad's heel spurs were acting up so we didn't go running. Here is a list of things I did (from memory):

Warm up - Elliptical machine for 5 min

Upper Body

  • 20 pushups
  • Dumbell curl - 2 sets x 12 reps
  • Shoulder rows - 12 reps
  • Sitting bench press - 12 reps
  • Butterfly press - 12 reps
  • Overhead tricep - 12 reps
  • Forearm curls - 2 sets x 12 reps
  • Pullups - 12 reps
Core & lower body
  • Crunches - 50 reps
  • Squats - 12 reps
  • Burpees - 12 reps
  • Jumping jacks - 50 reps
  • Skipping rope - 100 rotations

Cool down - Elliptical machine for 5 min and a little bit of stretching

I also talked with my dad about stretching and found realized that my feet are not straight up and down when I stretch. This causes more pain behind the knee and less of a stretch. When I corrected this I could feel more of a stretch and less pain.

When I went home last night Erin fell asleep on the couch so I turned on WEC which motivated me to a little more working out (along with the fudge I just ate...oopps). So I did a few more push ups, a few jumping jacks, and a little shadow boxing.

8/25/07 - SBD - Mr. Corta

This afternoon in SBD we started the class with normal stretching and then worked on basic techniques.

Some of those techniques included:

  • Low & high block
  • Center & high punch
  • Front, side, round, & back kicks
  • Yuk Soo Do
  • Kap kwon
  • chun gul, hu gul, kee ma, & sa ko rip jaseh
One of the nice things that Mr. Corta does is that he breaks the kicks down into 4 steps (set up kick, re-chamber, land). I love doing this because it works on leg strength and balance.

A few combos we did were
  • low block, reverse punch
  • high block, high punch
  • front kick, back kick, kap kwon, soo do
We ended class with 20 sit ups and 10 push ups.

After class I went down stairs and trained a little on my own.
I ran through all my forms, did 2 sets of 20 push ups, and 10 squats. I also did a few triangle drills.

  • slip your left hand under their bicep and grab your right wrist (cupping, no thumb)
  • make sure your face is away from them and paint the floor with their hand to finish

  • If opponent straightens their arm to defend the Americana
  • pull their arm high up to your shoulder
  • Also trap it with your head like you are holding a phone with no hands
  • Find their elbow and you have an arm lock
2nd option from Americana defense

08/15/07 - SBD - Losasso Sa Bom

Last night in SBD we started with the usual warm up, went into some sparring combinations, partnered up for sparring combos, sparred, and then did some tournament sparring.

Sparring Combos:

  • Front Kick to test the waters
  • Front kick (fake), round kick
  • Front kick, rear leg round kick
  • Front kick, spinning back kick
Sparring Combos w/ Partner:
We got to create our own combos with our partner. The idea was to set them up so you could preform your move.

  • When partner throws a round kick with their left leg, step in and to your left with a hook kick(Yup Hu Ri Gi) or side kick.
  • When partner throws a round, you spin and wheel kick
  • When partner throws a front kick, deflect it and Yuk Soo Do.

Sparring/Tournament Sparring:
Another sparring combo I like to use is the outside to inside kick, land, and then side kick same leg. By the time you land they are starting to move in and don't expect the side kick.

For the tournament sparring I was partnered with a very tall guy. I found myself going full force (good) but using very basic techniques (no spinning or jump kicks). Most points were given because of my back fist reverse punch. Next time try to slow it down a little and let him come to me as well.

8/15/07 - BJJ - Sa Bom Nim

Last night we did a warm up, learned 3 chokes, and rolled.

We started class by:
running laps
shuffling sideways
running in place and sprawling on command
50 crunches

Techniques:
3 different chokes

  • From Guard
    1. Grab their skirt on the left side and feed it to your right hand behind their head on the right side.

Next, replace your right hand with your left hand palm up. Your forearm should now be on their carotid artery.

Take your right hand and grab some cloth on their shoulder (your arms should now be crossed similar to the Helio Choke)

Lift your left elbow up to finish the choke.

    2. Same as choke above but now they defend by framing with their right arm.

Shove their right arm across their body to your right.

Pull down on their head and it is now similar to a triangle.

    3. This choke is applied after you sprawl.

Take your left hand (palm towards your body) under their head and grab their lapel. * Make sure you don't grab to deep.

With your right hand, grab their pant leg on your right side.

Tuck your head to their ribs on your right side and roll that way.

After your roll, use your right arm and go over their arm and under their head.

To finish, pull their lapel with your left hand while you push their head away with your right.
Rolling
I rolled one match (I think his name is Matt). Did pretty good for him being a blue belt. He showed me a move when you have someone in your guard.

Use both hands to pull their right arm to your right side. (like the set up for a triangle)
Immediately "hug" them so your chest is against their shoulder so they can not pull out.
With your left hand reach over their shoulder and grab their left arm that you pulled.
From there you can use your legs and momentum to "sweep" or roll them to your left side.
Make sure to use momentum like a pendulum sweep.

I think thats it for now. I will also try to post all of my old notes as well but we'll see how quickly that gets done. Also, I will be on vacation next week so hopefully I can at least get a work out in if I cant get any classes in.

Welcome!

Welcome to Ramon's Training Blog!

I will be trying to use this blog to record my training in Brazilian Jiu Jitsu(BJJ) and Soo bahk Do(SBD) as well. We'll see if its easier that pen and paper. This blog is mainly for myself so it might not be the most exciting but if you happen upon it, feel free to pick and choose!
